*Free* Pattern: Sandwich

How will you stack your crochet sandwich? This fun play set is great for kids!

Before you begin, you will need:


  • hook size 3:5
  • yarn needle
  • medium worsted weight yarn in:
    • off-white
    • dark brown
    • pink
    • light brown
    • light red
    • dark red
    • mustard orange
    • olive green
    • a different shade of green than olive
    • dark green
    • yellow
    • Orange
    • Blue

Skill level: Intermediate


You will work in rows and rounds with single crochet and half double crochet. You also need to use the tapestry crochet technique.


hk – hook

rd – round

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

fo – fasten off

fsc – foundation single crochet

st – stitch

ea – each

lps – loops

sc2tog – single crochet between two stitches to make them 1 sc

Bread: (make 4) start in off-white

Row 1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk – do not join

Row 2: ch 1, turn, (sc, 2sc) to end (9)

Row 3: ch 1 turn, (sc in 2, 2sc) to end (12)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, (sc in 3, 2sc) to end (15)

Row 5: ch 1, turn, (sc in 4, 2sc) to end (18)

Row 6: ch 1, turn (sc in 5, 2sc) to end (21)

Row 7: work along flat end: sc in each st (12)

Row 8, ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in 4, sc2tog, sc2tog (8)

Row 9-13: ch 1, turn, sc across (8)

sl st and fo

Crust: in dark brown

Rd 1: Attach dark brown, sc around entire slice of bread, working 3st into the two bottom corners (48)

When you have two pieces complete, sew them together using dark brown. This gives you a thick, sturdy piece of bread.

Meat/Soymeat: start in pink

Rd 1: ch 3, 8 hdc in 2nd ch from hk (8)

Rd 2: 2hdc around (16)

Rd 3: (hdc, 2hdc) around (24)

Rd 4: (hdc in 2, 2hdc) around (32)

Rd 5: (hdc in 3, 2hdc) around (40)

Rd 6: switch to light brown: (hdc in 4, 2hdc) around (45)

sl st, fo, weave in ends

Tomato slice: start in light red – you will be using tapestry crochet

Rd 1: ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hk (8)

Rd 2: 2sc around (16)

Rd 3: Begin the tapestry crochet technique using dark red (DR) and light red (LR)

(DR) 4 sc (LR) 2 sc in a pattern of (sc, 2sc) around (24)

Rd 4: (DR) 6 sc (LR) 2 sc in a pattern of (sc in 2, 2sc) around (32). fo DR

Rd 5: in LR only: (sc in 3, 2sc) around (40)

sl st, fo, weave in ends.

Seeds: embroider using mustard orange 6 seeds in each DR area

Cucumber slices: (make 2) start in an olive green

Rd 1: ch 2, 8sc in 2nd ch from hk (8)

Rd 2: 2sc around (16)

Rd 3: switch to a different shade of green: sc around (16)

sl st, fo and weave in end

Seeds: in off-white, embroider 3 sets of 3 seeds

Cheese slice: in yellow

Row 1: Make 10 fsc (or ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hk and across) (10)

Row 2-10: ch 1, turn, sc across (10)

Row 11: (this is actually a round) – sc around the entire cheese slice, working 3sc into each corner

sl st, fo and weave in end

Spinach (make 4) in dark green:

Sandwich bag: in orange

Rd 1: ch 14, hdc in 3rd ch from hk, hdc in 11, 6hdc in last st, hdc in 10, 3hdc in last st

Rd 2: hdc in 14, 2hdc in 2, hdc in 13, 2hdc in 2

Rd 3: hdc in 15, 2hdc in 3, hdc in 14, 2hdc in 3

Rd 4: hdc in back lps only, around

Rd 5-7: hdc around

Rd 8: join blue, sc around

Rd 9-13 : hdc around

Rd 14: in blue, sc around

Rd 15: sc in 3, fsc 12, skip 12 st, sc in 8, fsc 12, skip 12, sc in 7

Rd 16: sc around.

Sl st and fo.

In blue, spell EAT using this free pattern from Red Heart
