Batman Logo Applique:
I found this Batman logo chart by doing a google image search. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the creator to give due credit.
In order to transfer these squares into a usable applique for my hat, I disregarded the white and imagined each yellow and black square as a single crochet. I chose a good side and a bad side so that in using the jacquard technique, all the loose yarn would stay on the bad side. It doesn’t matter which side is which, just stay consistent and double check as you go!
This is how the pattern looks in writing:
Starting from the bottom: (Y)= yellow; (B) = black
Row 1: (Y) make 7 fsc (7)
Row 2: (Y) ch 1, turn: 2sc in 2, sc in 3, 2sc in 2 (11)
Row 3: (Y) ch 1, turn: 2sc, (B): sc, (Y): sc in 3 (B): sc, (Y): sc in 3, (B:) sc, (Y): 2sc (13)

FO black, but leave a long end for finishing (see below).
Row 14: (Y) ch 1, turn: sc2tog, sc in 9, sc2tog (11)
Row 15: (Y) ch 1, turn, sc2tog twice, sc in 3, sc2tog twice (7)
How it looks before finishing:
And here is the wrong side:
Finishing your applique: (Optional)
Do one round of yellow sc around the entire applique (approx 41 sc). sl st, FO, leaving a long end for sewing.
Use black yarn to clean up any areas of your batman symbol if the yellow blends in and tie off the black.
After finishing:
Now you are ready to make your hat!
To size your hat, I absolutely love this guide by Annie’s PicturePerfect Blog. I will be making an adult sized hat with a bit extra room for the lining.
With black:
Ear Flap 1
Work in Rows
Row 1: hdc in 18, ch 1, turn
Row 2-4: hdc in 18, ch 1, turn
Row 5: hdc2tog, hdc in 14 , hdc2tog, ch 1, turn (16)
Row 6: hdc2tog, hdc in 12, hdc2tog, ch 1, turn (14)
Row 7: hdc2tog, hdc in 10, hdc2tog, ch 1, turn (12)
Row 8: hdc2tog twice, hdc in 4, hdc2tog twice, ch 1, turn (8)
Row 9: hdc2tog four times, ch 1, turn (4)
Row 10: hdc across (4). FO
Ear Flap 2
Row 1: Count 26 stitches from the ear flap. With wrong side facing, attach black to the next st with a sl st. ch 1, hdc in same space as the sl st and in next 17 st (18)
Repeat Rows 2-10 of Ear Flap 1. FO
Edging black
Round 1: Attach black, sc around both ear flaps, sc in back posts around the rest of the hat, sl st FO
Round 2: Attach yellow, sc around ear flaps; sc in back posts of the previous round along the rest of the hat
Braids
Attach long strands of yellow and black to the end of either ear flap. Tie at the ear flap, braid, and tie at the bottom
PomPom
Wrap yellow and black around three fingers at the same time, approx 20x. Cut. Take a strand of black yarn and firmly tie in the middle. Cut the loops on either side and sew to top the hat.
Now you can sew on your batman applique!
Lining with 7.0 hook and bulky yarn
Rd 7-9: hdc around. check for fit inside the hat. sl st, FO, sew inside
And that’s it!!!!!
